Radiophonic Dreamscapes #1 (2022) is a radio art installation. The project involved a workshop wherein participants paired up to solder together a simple FM radio transmitter, as designed by Japanese radio artist Tetsuo Kogawa. Each transmitter sends out an FM radio signal in a small radius (about 20 ft), micro casting the audio sent to it from portable MP3 players. We built six transmitters between 12 participants. Each participant also submitted a sound file for micro casting. These files were combined into loops are playing from each of the 6 transmitters. Performing or experiencing the installation involves moving through the volatile radiophonic space produced by the interacting transmitters, most of which interfere with each other’s signals in productive moments of failed tuning. Audio sources to listen for include “Dude saying oh wow at coffee shop over and over”, “Ballade au ruisseau”, a synth loop, a composition called “stupidity at its finest”, field recordsing from Chicago, Montreal and other locations in Quebec, and also various readings and spoken-word elements. The work explores the interaction of bodies, memories, electromagnetic fields, static, resisters, capacitors, transistors, batteries, wires, and sonic leaks.
